Philip Ebong, a 24-year-old teacher who teaches Physics and Chemistry at the Dee Jewels International College, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, has been arrested by the Gowon Estate Police Division, Akowonjo, Lagos, for allegedly sexually harassing a 14-year-old student of the same school.
It was learnt that the teacher had made several sex advances to the student and the victim had always been seen in his office at break hours. The victim eventually gave way and later invited the teacher to her guardians’ home while they were away.
The harassment became so obvious that her classmates and friends called her “Uncle Phillip’s wife,”. But things changed after the victim informed her guardian of her decision to switch from a Science class to an Art class. And after much questioning, the victim confessed to the teacher’s act and how he had banned her from entering his classes as well as threats to ensured she failed all her examinations.
However, Phillip denied the allegations saying, “I am close to all my students; that is what I was taught in the College of Education that a teacher had to be friendly. I just took an interest in the victim because I noticed she was not taking her homework seriously. All this talk of my touching and kissing her, they are all lies. I admit going to her house but it was because I wanted to see her guardian.”
Executive Director of Spaces for Change, Mrs. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, said the case was reported to them by the guardian. She said based on their investigations, other students have also confessed to sexual abuse by the same teacher. She promised to seek legal redress in the court if the Police fails to exercise full disciplinary action against Ebong.
When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, said full details of the allegations would be made known later.
